Nausea during pregnancy
Q: My pregnant daughter has extreme nausea and vomiting. Can you recommend something for nausea and morning sickness?
JVW: The early months of pregnancy can be a little unsettling to the stomach. However, supplementing with ginger extract may offer some relief. It is by far the best-proven treatment for nausea, no matter what the cause.
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study led by Australian researchers illustrates ginger’s therapeutic effects. The study treated the nausea and vomiting of 120 women with morning sickness who were in their first trimester of pregnancy with either 125 milligrams of ginger extract in capsule form or a placebo four times a day. Seventy-six percent of the ginger group reported significant relief within a half hour of consuming a capsule.
Ginger is also very well tolerated and is safe for both mother and baby.
