The benefits of building stronger bones just keep rolling in. A couple of weeks ago, I told you about some research showing that two of the most important nutrients for strengthening your bones may also help keep you from gaining weight. Now it looks like better bone density might not only keep you thin, it could also protect your from losing your vision.
A study published in the May issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that, in a group of over 1,000 women, those with the highest bone mineral density (BMD) had a 34 percent lower risk of a condition called age-related macular degeneration than women with lower BMDs.
While the researchers aren’t sure exactly why this link exists, it certainly can’t hurt to start boosting your bone density right now. As we discussed previously, calcium and vitamin D are two of the key nutrients necessary for doing just that.
