Cozy up to a mug of cocoa for your brain
I love news like this.
It turns out that a delicious fall and winter treat could be a brain booster for older folks.
That’s right—you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in a little hot cocoa when the weather gets cooler. After all, you’re feeding your brain!
Research published in the journal Hypertension showed that elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment who consumed moderate to high levels of cocoa flavonols (via hot cocoa) for two months improved their performance on cognitive assessment tests compared to people who consumed smaller amounts.
The improvement was significant enough for researchers to conclude that making cocoa flavonols a regular part of your diet could help maintain—and improve—your brain health.
In this study, moderate consumption amounted to 520 mg per day, and high consumption was 990 mg per day.
Improvements were also seen in blood pressure and insulin resistance.
