Cancer research has NOT gone to the dogs. And that’s disappointing.

In an e-Tip we sent you in 2006, we told you about researchers who trained dogs to detect breast, lung, and other cancers. The accuracy rate of these Fidos was worth barking about — often scoring close to 100 percent.

While we cannot state that the accuracy rate of binary signals will be in the league of the Dog’s, is fairly accurate. With the advancing technologies it is possible to reach 100% accuracy in the near future. For now, there are several reputable traders like Bitcoin Code which are fairly accurate.

But in the eight years since that e-Tip, I’m afraid not much has happened. Yes, research has moved ahead. But it’s almost all focused on dollar signs. Whatever happened to the ethic of helping patients survive and THEN reaping the benefits?

Bloomberg News reports that University of Pennsylvania researchers recently trained a dog to sniff out ovarian cancer in tissue samples. The dog’s success rate is over 90 percent. That’s a huge breakthrough. Ovarian cancer is highly treatable when caught early. But it’s rarely caught in the early stages so the fatality rate is tragically high.

A few years ago my family was devastated when we lost my young sister-in-law to ovarian cancer. Her agonizing story plays out more than 14,000 times every year in the U.S.

So here we finally have this remarkable method for spotting ovarian cancer early, and what’s the reaction? Here’s how Bloomberg puts it: “Most current research is looking at how to copy the canine ability to smell disease either with a machine or a chemical test.”

In other words, training dogs isn’t going to make anyone rich. But a dog nose machine? Make that happen and you’ll have to start building money bins to store all your cash.

Look, I wasn’t born yesterday. I know our system is driven by profits. But doesn’t it seem like someone could, you know, save lives RIGHT NOW with a program to use dogs to test for ovarian and other cancers?

It might not make billions, but it could certainly generate enough funds to make it worth the effort.

Oh, and as an added bonus, untold numbers of cancer patients would be able to post photos online with this caption: “Here’s the dog who saved my life.”

That seems like all the payoff anyone would need.

A new study has concluded that the saturated fats in cheese and other dairy products could help hold off type 2 diabetes. And while I’d like to just say that it’s better late than never, the mainstream has, once again, managed to mangle the message.

The truth is, over time, cheese won’t deliver on the type 2 promise.

The study was flawed from the start. Instead of asking volunteers to eat a specific amount of cheese daily for several weeks or months, researchers relied on questionnaires that quizzed them about their eating habits.

In other words, this wasn’t a placebo controlled study with rock solid evidence. And here’s why that matters…

In an e-Tip we sent you a few years ago, Dr. Wright pointed out that cheese and other dairy foods are high protein and low carb. So far so good for a type 2 or pre diabetic.

But there’s a catch. And the catch isn’t actually about blood sugar — it’s an insulin issue.

FDA bullies change the rules again

In any negative write up about dietary supplements, you’ll spot some variation of this line…

“Supplements are unregulated.”

Yep. No regulation at all! It’s the wild wild West out there. Critics of alternative medicine would like you to believe that supplements are as dangerous as dynamite, so they resort to what amounts to a blatant lie.

In the REAL world, supplements are tightly regulated, of course. And the FDA appears to have no trouble at all drawing up new guidelines whenever it serves their Big Pharma benefactors. That’s how this rigged system works. It’s their ballgame, their field, their ball, so they make up the rules. And every now and then, out of nowhere — surprise! — the rules change.

For a couple of years now, FDA officials have been changing the rules for inflammation.

As I’ve mentioned before, chronic inflammation plays a role in certain diseases. But inflammation isn’t a disease. It’s a normal bodily process — an immune system tool. And yet the FDA has suddenly started treating it like a disease. They’ve sent out numerous warnings to supplement makers, ordering them to stop making claims about nutrients that “curb” or “relieve” inflammation, even though certain nutrients have been flat out PROVEN to do just that.

And I’m sure you can guess what I’m going to tell you next. Yes, coincidentally, drug makers have started developing products that are supposed to stop inflammation. Of course, they don’t want to have to deal with competition from supplements, so you’ll pardon me if I point out that this coincidence looks an awful lot like they got their puppets at the FDA to move the goal posts and shove that little competition problem aside.

What. A. Racket!

Holistic medical writer Erik Goldman wonders if a non-specific physiological process like inflammation is interpreted as a disease, what’s next from the FDA? Will congestion land in this category? How about itching? Or oxidation?

That last one is a BIG one. Imagine not being able to call vitamin C an antioxidant! (Good chance the FDA IS imagining that right now.)

The next time you come across that glaring falsehood that supplements aren’t regulated or are “lightly” regulated, you’ll know what’s really going on. Anyone who makes that ridiculous claim is trying to drag you down the Big Pharma garden path.

Dr. Dean Focht, a medical resident at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, asked 51 individuals between the ages of 3 and 22 to use either standard liquid nitrogen freezing therapy or “duct tape therapy” for wart removal. Of the 25 individuals using duct tape, 85% had their warts disappear, usually within a month, compared to just a 60% success rate for the liquid nitrogen group.

Duct tape therapy is pretty easy. Just cut the duct tape to the size of the wart and stick it on for six days. Then remove the tape, soak the wart in water, and “buff’ it with pumice or an emery board. Twelve hours later, apply new tape. Repeat this cycle until the wart disappears.

You said your warts are on your hands, so I imagine you won’t be too excited about showing your duct tape patches to the world. The easiest solution is to just cover the duct tape with a Band-Aid.

Soy is not the miracle life saver a new report makes it out to be

Men, at your next checkup, don’t be surprised if your doctor gives you the good news: Soy protein is a blood-sugar-controlling, heart-disease-preventing, testosterone-boosting miracle food!

And here’s the best way to respond to that newsflash: “Nope. Nope. And nope.”

I’ve just read a press release about a new soy study, and guess what? Apparently the only thing soy DOESN’T do is leap tall buildings in a single bound. I mean, press releases tend to play up the positive, but this one reads like an advertising pitch hyped up on way too many Red Bulls.

UK researchers say they wanted to see if soy phytoestrogens caused testosterone levels to drop in diabetic men with low T. Not only did soy improve blood sugar, it also increased testosterone. It’s a miracle! Back up the soy bean truck and let’s get this party started.

Well…not so fast.

The men in this small study got all the big benefits with 30 grams of soy per day. And coincidentally that’s exactly the daily dose that Weston A. Price Foundation researchers link to hypothyroidism, with symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, and constipation.

The new UK study only lasted 12 weeks. But researchers at Weston A. Price have been studying soy since the 90s. Their long term results tell a much different story. Here are a few highlights…

* Soy contains high levels of phytic acid, which reduces your body’s assimilation of important minerals, including calcium, magnesium, and zinc.
* Soy (a famous source of protein) can actually interfere with protein digestion.
* Soy increases your body’s requirement of vitamin B12, which is essential for nerve health, cognitive function, and shingles prevention.
* Soy increases your body’s requirement for vitamin D.
* Soy contains too much aluminum, which is toxic to your kidneys and nervous system.

As I’ve mentioned before, fermented soy products such as miso, tamari, natto, and tempeh don’t cause the same problems as soy protein, which is used in a gazillion processed foods. But even with fermented soy, there’s an added danger that begins at the source.

Nearly all the soy produced in the U.S. is grown from genetically modified seeds. That means almost all of it is drenched in Roundup weed killer. In case you missed it, you can click on this link to read how the colossal health blunder of Roundup is unfolding.

As a nutritionally oriented physician, Dr. Wright doesn’t think much of soy. Here’s his take on it: “Unlike other vegetables that you can pick and eat, soy is not suitable for human consumption unless it undergoes extensive processing, involving chemical extractions, fermentation, and high temperatures.” (Go here to read Dr. Wright’s specific warning for women who eat soy.)

For years, Dr. Wright has recommended caution in soy consumption until the debate is resolved. But don’t let anyone tell you this new study resolves it. It just adds more pie in the sky nonsense.

Vitamin E has gotten an unfair rap for years — here’s why

Will researchers apologize for trashing this vitamin’s reputation?

Last month, researchers finally let vitamin E out of the dog house. And it was LONG overdue.

The study concluded, once and for all, that vitamin E does NOT cause prostate cancer. And that’s 100 percent true as long as you remember this important tip.

And it’s this synthetic form of the vitamin that’s no doubt caused all the confusion and negative reports about vitamin E for the past few years. Researchers using this junk for large, long, expensive trials have wasted their time — and ours.

What a colossal blunder! Imagine that a team of first rate scientists from the finest colleges launched a manned rocket to Mars, landed it on Venus, and then told everyone the big news: “We put men on Mars!”

That’s how embarrassing this vitamin E screw up is. In the universe of micronutrients, these vitamin E researchers don’t even know what planet they’re on!

But while they were blundering, they might have actually stumbled onto something useful.

In 2011, one of these studies concluded with this… “Dietary supplementation with vitamin E significantly increased the risk of prostate cancer among healthy men.”

Yep — that one made headlines for sure. (Of course e-Tips saw right through the glaring flaw of that study. Check this link for the lowdown.)

But one month ago, a new follow-up from another large study reported that vitamin E had no effect in preventing or causing prostate cancer.

Now, both studies were long (several years), both were very large (thousands of men), both used synthetic E, and the dosage was the same: 400 IU. But there was one key difference. In the study that showed prostate cancer risk, E was taken daily. In the study with no risk, E was taken every other day.

Inadvertently, these studies might have given us the first solid clinical insight that the synthetic form of E is more dangerous than we thought. If you take, on average, 200 IU per day, apparently there’s no prostate cancer risk. If you double that and take 400 IU per day, then it looks like you’ll have “significantly increased risk.”

Now THAT is a very important finding because too many of the vitamin E supplements on grocery store and pharmacy shelves are the junk synthetic form. If you pick up a supplement bottle that contains synthetic E (listed as either “all-rac-alpha-tocopheryl acetate” or “d,l-alpha-tocopherol), drop it and run!

Jet air hand dryers spread bacteria

I swear you could practically strip paint off a house with those jet air hand dryers you find in most restrooms these days.

But most of us happily use them anyway, convinced they’re the best way to get our mitts dry without having to worry about those gross germs lurking on every surface in a public bathroom.

Turns out nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact, every single time you press the button on one of those things it’s like shooting germs out of a cannon.

Researchers at UK’s University of Leeds tested bacterial contamination with the use of paper towels, warm air dryers, and jet air dryers. To get a bacteria reading, researchers covered volunteers’ hands with a bacteria called lactobacilli (don’t worry — it’s not harmful).

And once they hit the “on” button, that bacteria was flying everywhere, being breathed in by everyone within a few feet. And this is healthy bacteria, mind you — imagine what these hand dryers are doing with the nasty waste that’s REALLY on your hands.

Bacterial counts were nearly five times higher with the jet dryer compared to the warm air dryer. But the real winner was the humble paper towel. Jet drying bacteria counts were a staggering 27 times higher than drying your hands the old-fashioned way.

The solution here is simple. Wash your hands with plain old soap and warm water. And skip those high-tech hand dryers and towel dry them instead.

This tasty little green nut could change a diabetic’s life — no kidding.

There is so much happening in the finance sector and the economy is getting harder to understand. In December 2013 I told you about a new study from the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation in India. Researchers assigned identical diets to 500 volunteers who’d been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Half the group got to enjoy a handful of pistachios every day (around 200 calories).

Their daily snack appeared to make a big difference. Those in the pistachio group lost more weight, shed more belly fat, and had a better insulin response than subjects who didn’t get the daily treat. (You can go here to discover more details.)

Now, that’s not exactly earth shaking. But add in the results of another new study and things get a LOT more interesting.

This study — just published in the Journal of the American Heart Association — was designed much like the Indian study. Two groups of diabetics followed the same diet. But one group added two pistachio snacks per day (about 150 nuts, total).

After one month, researchers gave each volunteer two stress tests (one physical, one mental) and measured blood pressure. Blood vessels of those on the pistachio diet turned out to be significantly more relaxed. Vascular constriction was reduced and neural control of the heart improved.

Hopefully there’s more diabetes/pistachio research in the pipeline. But while we wait for that, no need to put off making pistachios a daily snack. These small wonders are packed with B vitamins and important minerals such as potassium. They’ve also got plenty of fiber, but few calories.

Young women can get a huge dose of cervical cancer protection by following Grandma’s advice: Eat your vegetables. Specifically, you’ll want to stock up on green vegetables and vegetables from the cruciferous family. (Broccoli, cauliflower, and kale are three cruciferous standouts.)

One of the early clues that cruciferous vegetables may reduce the risk of cervical cancer came from studies of laryngeal and/or vocal cord polyps, also known as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Although frequently benign, this condition can proceed to actual cancer, which can be fatal. RRP is caused by HPV, specifically HPV-6 and HPV-11, two of the four main HPV types that cause cervical cancer.

In a 1998 report from Long Island Jewish Hospital, researchers noted a close connection between estrogen metabolism and the growth of HPV viruses that cause RRP.

They wrote: “Our results show an inverse relationship between the ratio of C-2 to C-16 alpha hydroxylated estrogens and the severity of RRP.” Translated into English: The lower the “2/16″ estrogen ratio, the worse the RRP; the higher the “2/16″ ratio, the less severe the RRP.

In this study, the researchers asked RRP sufferers to eat significantly more cruciferous vegetables. They found that compounds in these vegetables led to increases in the “2/16″ estrogen ratio, which correlated with improvement in RRP.

Another study on RRP also found that a natural substance found in cruciferous vegetables called indole-3-carbinol (I3C) can favorably influence HPV-associated tumors. Researchers asked volunteers to take I3C to explore its effects on RRP. Of the 33 volunteers, more than 30 percent had complete remission after five years. Another 30 percent had a reduction in the growth of RRP.

In addition, young women should make sure they’re getting an ample amount of folate in their diet. Research shows that folate can reverse pre-cancer of the cervix (cervical dysplasia) and very early cervical cancer (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia).
